Our mesothelioma lawyers are proud to represent mesothelioma victims and their families across the United States, including hardworking men and women in South Carolina.

During the 20th century, tons of asbestos were mined and used in thousands of products in many industries, including power plants, shipyards, chemical plants, schools and universities in South Carolina. The state also has many natural deposits of asbestos, putting residents at further risk of exposure.
Major cities in South Carolina where asbestos exposure is known to have occurred at job sites include:

Dr. Carol Sherman, thoracic oncologist at the Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC) and the Hollings Cancer Center. Sherman has been at Hollings since 1998 where she first served as medical director for 10 years. She also has served as division of hematology/oncology interim chief for three years. Sherman graduated from the University of Massachusetts Medical School and did both a residency and fellowship there before opening her practice in the area. She came to Hollings in 1997.
She treats a variety of thoracic malignancies, focusing much of her time with lung cancer, some of which was caused by asbestos exposure.
Alice Boylan M.D.
Professor of Medicine
Hollings Cancer Center at the University of South Carolina
86 Jonathan Lucas St.
Charleston, SC 29425

boylana@musc.edu
Dr. Boylan, director of the Medical Acute and Critical Care Department at MUSC, has been studying pulmonary disease since the ’80s during her training at the Dartmouth Medical Center in New Hampshire and the University of California in San Francisco. She established herself as an authority in diseases of the pleura, such as mesothelioma, a rare cancer attributed to asbestos exposure.
She has been at MUSC since 1995, where she has carved her niche as an associate professor of medicine, pursuing her interests in bronchoscopy, lung cancer and asbestos-related lung conditions that include pulmonary diseases, as well as pleural effusions, plaques and thickening.
Boylan recently finished work as the primary and co-investigator on two different studies, using grants totaling $1.5 million. The first was the Role of Oncogene in Mesothelioma, and the other was Molecular Markers of Malignancy Compared to Histology in Bronchial Samples.
She previously was awarded grants from the American Lung Association, the U.S. Department of Defense, the American Cancer Society, the National Cancer Institute and the U.S. Department of Energy, among others.
In the last several years, Boylan has co-chaired a variety of conferences and symposiums, including “Mesothelioma and Translational Pleural Disease.” She has lectured many times on the diagnosis and management of mesothelioma at various venues.
Chadrick E. Denlinger, M.D.
Thoracic Surgeon
Hollings Cancer Center at the Medical University of South Carolina
86 Jonathan Lucas Street
Charleston, SC 29425
(843) 792-9300
denlinge@musc.edu
Chadrick Denlinger is Assistant Professor of Surgery. He graduated with honors from the Ohio State University College of Medicine and Public Health in 2000 and was inducted into the Alpha Omega Alpha medical honor society. He then completed training in general surgery at the University of Virginia in 2007 which included a two year research fellowship investigating cell signaling pathways in non-small cell lung cancer. Following this training, Dr. Denlinger went to Washington University where he completed cardiothoracic surgery training in June 2009. Dr. Denlinger was then recruited to join the thoracic surgical faculty at the Medical University of South Carolina and was attracted here by the strong leadership of the surgery department and the interest of the division to advance treatment options for thoracic diseases from both a clinical and basic science perspective.
Dr. Denlinger’s clinical interest is in treating lung cancer, benign and malignant esophageal diseases as well as lung transplantation. He is interested in advancing minimally invasive surgical techniques, and utilizes this approach as the clinical situation allows. Approximately 70% of all anatomic lung cancer resections are performed using VATS techniques. The remaining resections are performed through a traditional thoracotomy due to the size and location of the tumor. In addition, minimally invasive techniques are also used when appropriate to perform esophageal resections. Every operation is performed primary by the surgery resident with Dr. Denlinger providing assistance.
Dr. Denlinger is interested in the molecular events occurring that allow lung and esophageal cancers to become invasive and metastasize to distant organ sites. He believes that his collaborative research efforts with basic scientists and other physicians at MUSC are critical for improving the care of our current and future generations. An important component basic science research involves the study of primary human cancers. For this reason, Dr. Denlinger has worked to help establish a collaborative tissue bank that involves MUSC, Washington University and the University of Virginia. This project includes banking lung cancer specimens along with associated blood, urine, sputum and saliva samples. In addition, extensive clinical data is recorded and associated with the tissue and biological specimens from each patient.
Dr. Denlinger is currently the Surgical Director of the Lung Transplant Program, and was recently appointed as the Scientific Director of the Hollings Cancer Center Tissue Biorepository.
Mesothelioma Resources
Mesothelioma is a rare and very serious form of cancer found in the lining surrounding the lungs, the stomach, the testes, or the heart. The only known cause of mesothelioma is exposure to asbestos.
It often takes 10 to 60 years after exposure to asbestos before the symptoms of mesothelioma develop. This period of time is referred to as a latency period. Because of the latency period, the disease commonly affects men and women that are at least 50 years of age and that worked with asbestos between 10 and 60 years ago.
South Carolina Mesothelioma Facts
Today, the use of asbestos and the handling of asbestos materials are regulated in the United States but its use is not banned. It is recognized as a hazardous material and is monitored by OSHA and the EPA but exposure risks still exist. The United States still consumes 30 million pounds of new asbestos per year. Additionally, many old homes, factories, schools, warehouses, and commercial buildings still contain old asbestos products.
The state of South Carolina also has deposits of natural serpentine asbestos, putting residents at further risk of exposure.
The average incident rate of mesothelioma in the United States is 1 / 100,000 - the state of South Carolina is below the National average.
There are a number of different jobs that caused a larger amount of exposure to asbestos on a more frequent basis. Below you will find today's employment numbers for several of these high risk jobs in South Carolina:
