Indianapolis was founded in 1820 as the capital city of Indiana. The location for the state capital was chosen for its centralized location as well as its position along the White River, which state officials hoped would serve as transportation before discovering the waterway was too sandy to be used for trade. In 1847 the first railroad came to Indianapolis, followed by railroad connections bringing growth to the city as the economy became focused on government and manufacturing.
At the turn of the 20th century a large deposit of natural gas and oil was found outside of Indianapolis and many factories set up shop in the city as the state offered free natural gas to companies who built in Indianapolis. Automobile manufacturing became a big industry in the city, and in 1909 the Indianapolis Motor Speedway, now home to the Indy 500, was built as a testing facility for cars and tires manufactured in the city. By 1920 the natural resources fueling Indianapolis factories had dried up and the Great Depression hit the city hard.
During World War II Indianapolis served as a center of wartime manufacturing and troop transport due to its transportation network and central location. Manufacturing of food products, paper, petroleum, plastics, apparel, bricks, and machinery among other industries remained the main economic factor in Indianapolis throughout the 20th century.
The long history of manufacturing and railroading in Indianapolis includes many occupations and industries where asbestos was popularly used, putting workers at increased risk of developing mesothelioma cancer from asbestos exposure.
