St. Louis, MO (June 2013) – Studies have shown that men are more likely to be diagnosed with mesothelioma than women as a result of the fact that more men have worked in high risk asbestos exposure job sites. Men should be aware that the latency period for developing mesothelioma and other asbestos related diseases can range from 15 to more than 50 years from the date of first exposure. If an individual worked in a known area or company where asbestos has been found, symptoms could arise years later due to asbestos exposure.
“Because of the long latency period, many mesothelioma victims have a hard time understanding that it was caused by exposure from asbestos years before their diagnosis. Even harder, is when they find out that their employer knew or should have known of the harmful health effects from asbestos exposure and continued to use it.
