  • Step 1 of 2: What is the diagnosis?

Men's Health Week

St. Louis, MO (June 2013) – Studies have shown that men are more likely to be diagnosed with mesothelioma than women as a result of the fact that more men have worked in high risk asbestos exposure job sites.  It is important to MRHFM, one of the nation’s largest mesothelioma only law firms, to spread information and awareness to men that may have been exposed to asbestos at designated  worksites where asbestos dangers have been identified during Men’s Health Week June 10-16.

“We have worked with several husbands and fathers that are the sole providers for their family when they are diagnosed with mesothelioma,” said Neil Maune, partner at MRHFM.  “It is important for these men to check if they have been exposed to asbestos in their past and seek legal help to file a claim if applicable.”

Mesothelioma cancer awareness fits into the overall goal of Men’s Health Week to heighten awareness of preventable health problems and encourage detection and treatment of disease among men and boys.  While asbestos is rarely used in the Unites States for new projects or structures, it is still very prevalent in older materials used from the 1900s through the 1980s. Men should be aware that the latency period for developing mesothelioma and other asbestos related diseases can range from 15 to more than 50 years from the date of first exposure.  If an individual worked in a known area or company where asbestos has been found, symptoms could arise years later due to asbestos exposure.

“Because of the long latency period, many mesothelioma victims have a hard time understanding that it was caused by exposure from asbestos years before their diagnosis.  Even harder, is when they find out that their employer knew or should have known of the harmful health effects from asbestos exposure and continued to use it.  That is just one reason why mesothelioma victims should explore their legal rights,” said Neil Maune.

There are several known job sites around the country, in every state, that have been designated as “hot” sites where asbestos has been identified including navy ships, construction sites and mines.  Learn more at www.mesotheliomabook.com where you can find high risk jobs and job sites, as well as, mesothelioma information by state.  For more information about Men’s Health Week visit http://www.menshealthmonth.org.  MRHFM also offers a free book about mesothelioma that can be requested online or by calling 800-358-5922.
